Backup and business continuity for law firms

A backup only counts once it has been restored. Ours are held outside Microsoft 365 and test-restored on a schedule, and the date of the last test is recorded where you can see it.

1. What is backed up

  • Exchange Online: mailboxes, calendars and contacts.
  • SharePoint and OneDrive: sites, libraries and personal drives.
  • Teams: conversations and files.

The backup is held outside your Microsoft 365 tenant. If an administrator account is ever compromised, the attacker can't reach the copy.

2. Restore tests on a schedule

We restore from the backup on a schedule to prove it works. The result goes into your documentation register and your monthly report, so the question "when did we last test a restore?" always has an answer.

3. Keeping the firm working

Continuity is mostly about having fewer single points of failure:

  • Files live in SharePoint and OneDrive, so a dead laptop costs minutes of a lawyer's day. A replacement can be shipped and sets itself up with Windows Autopilot.
  • Because the firm runs from the cloud, staff can keep working from home if the office is unavailable.
  • If the office internet drops, we call your internet provider. We hold the account details, so you don't have to find them.
  • Agree in advance what happens if the office goes offline on a filing day: who works from where, and who has a mobile hotspot.

Our guide to business continuity planning for law firms works through four common outages and what to agree before they happen.

4. Practice and document management data

If your practice management or document management system is hosted by its vendor, the vendor's backup arrangements apply to it. We find out what those arrangements are, record them in your register, and tell you plainly if we see a gap.

Tell us about your firm.

Roughly how many people, what you have now and what keeps going wrong. We reply within one business day with a straight answer, including if we are not the right fit.
